How to Be Okay with All This Going On: Find Something to Do

As promised on my Facebook page, I’m hoping to spend some time this week (and maybe next) talking about things we can do as individuals to feel better with all the craziness going on. I humbly have a few suggestions.

One of the hardest parts of the current climate is that there’s really not much any of us can do except watch. These days the news is happening to us. It can feel helpless.

When there’s nothing you can do, I say, find something to do.

Pick up a hobby (are people still knitting? Like scarves and stuff. That was all the rage for a while). Join a 21-day or 30-day challenge to accomplish some goal. Buy one of those really complicated Lego sets with the tiny pieces. Take on that project at work and give it your all. Whatever it is, find something that involves your mind and body and requires some level of daily attention.

Personally, I’m making good on new year’s resolutions to read all the books I started and never completed. I also joined a friend’s 10-day spiritual journey on connecting with God. I’m also napping more, but that’s another post in this series.

Besides the obvious benefits, you start occupying your own headspace again as opposed to letting all these outside forces hijack your day and thoughts.

You can’t do much about what’s happened and still happening in Washington, but you can change your mental environment…. and maybe you’ll get a cool scarf out of it.
