How to Be Okay with All This Going On: Find Your Happy (Social Media) Place
The Internet is truly the abyss. You’ll never touch the bottom. There’s too much content.
The beauty is that you can find anything you need, but that’s also the downfall. When you want to rage against your enemy or hate-read their website, that’s all available to you.
I’ve finally come to grips with the fact that I’m not quitting social media anytime soon. I need it for work. I need it to share content with you fine people. COVID shut so much down that this is really the only means to feel a sense of community.
All that said, I notice a lightness when I take breaks. I’m less anxious and more focused.
So perhaps the goal is to limit how much social media you consume. You get to be picky about who makes the cut. Only platforms and channels that serve your goals to preserve your mental health need apply.
I, for one, am getting reacquainted with Pinterest. Visual lover that I am, it’s weird how I forgot how fun it was to load up on images that spark my imagination, bring me joy, and allow me to vicariously be the afro hippie sun goddess I want to be (see screenshot above). It’s fun. It’s escapist. And I can easily get the wrong stuff out of my eye line.
That may not be your bag. Maybe you want a steady stream of the ”Cats of Instagram.” Or what about the comedy accounts? There are so many. You could stay in stitches all day long.
You know this. You’re no novice to social media. But it needs to be said because the nasty, anger-inducing content is a draw right now. You could lose hours (I shamefully have) watching your preferred political party tear down the opposition. And while it’s momentarily pleasing, it never really satisfies and you only log back on for more.
I’m not saying to bury your head in the sand. I’m just saying you could use more stuff like this in your life.
